Current Johns Hopkins Medicine postings list $37.70 to $65.99 an hour for a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst and $41.94 to $73.39 an hour for a Lead Business Intelligence Analyst in Baltimore. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $103,790 median salary for computer systems analysts and $112,590 for data scientists in May 2024.

The ranges overlap considerably.

A highly paid senior analyst could earn more than a lead analyst placed near the bottom of the lead range. That does not make the structure inconsistent. Salary positioning can reflect prior experience, internal equity, specialized knowledge, and the scope of the particular assignment.

Title alone is not enough.

What the hourly maximum does not mean

A headline saying a Johns Hopkins BI analyst earns $152,651 a year would use a real number and create a false impression.

That total is the annualized value of the $73.39 maximum in one lead-analyst posting. It is not the typical salary, an expected starting offer, or the amount received by everyone who meets the minimum qualifications. Johns Hopkins explicitly states that compensation will reflect equity and experience among roles with comparable scope and responsibility.

The lower end requires similar caution.

The $37.70 minimum annualizes to $78,416 at 40 hours a week, but the position may involve variations in paid time, schedule, employment status, or organizational assignment. Annualized conversions do not include bonuses, overtime, benefits, or unpaid absences.

The official posting gives the defensible range. It does not provide the selected candidate’s final rate.

This distinction becomes particularly important in technology, where a broad title can hide substantial differences in platform expertise, data ownership, management duties, and industry experience.

What BLS systems-analyst data shows

The BLS “Occupational Outlook Handbook: Computer Systems Analysts,” updated August 28, 2025, reports a $103,790 median annual wage in May 2024. The lowest 10% earned below $63,160, while the highest 10% earned above $166,030.

BLS describes systems analysts as workers who study an organization’s current systems, evaluate costs and benefits, add functionality, and help configure technology that improves operations. Entry typically requires a bachelor’s degree, although employers may accept a business or liberal-arts degree combined with relevant technical skills.

Johns Hopkins BI roles sit near that occupational market but are not perfect matches.

A business-intelligence analyst may focus more heavily on data governance, reporting, performance measures, dashboards, clinical operations, or enterprise data warehouses than a general systems analyst. The BLS category remains useful because it captures comparable enterprise-analysis work, yet it does not identify Hopkins-specific healthcare knowledge or internal certification requirements.

The senior Hopkins range crosses the BLS median. The lead range extends above it.

That comparison suggests market overlap, not proof that either Hopkins role is paid above or below the appropriate market level.

Data science offers another benchmark

BLS reported a $112,590 median annual wage for data scientists in May 2024. The lowest 10% earned below $63,650, and the highest 10% earned above $194,410. Employment is projected to grow 34% from 2024 to 2034, with approximately 23,400 openings annually.

The Johns Hopkins Medicine technology search reviewed on July 19, 2026 included a Senior Data Scientist, Precision Medicine Clinical AI position alongside BI, ERP, application, data-governance, and AI-automation roles.

That listing mix shows how healthcare IT is moving beyond traditional support.

The system needs workers who can manage patient and operational data, maintain enterprise applications, build analytics products, support artificial intelligence, and translate technical output into clinical or business decisions. Yet these jobs do not all belong under the BLS data-scientist category.

A BI analyst who builds reporting systems should not automatically be compared with a machine-learning scientist developing predictive models. Their tools may overlap, while their labor markets and salary expectations differ.

The healthcare premium is partly about context

Technical skills alone do not explain the Johns Hopkins requirements.

The senior BI posting seeks several years of healthcare experience, not simply analytics experience. The lead position also requires a long healthcare background and asks for knowledge that can be demonstrated through credentials involving Epic, Tableau, analytics, or project management.

Healthcare data carries operational friction that ordinary commercial analytics may not.

Analysts may work with clinical quality measures, reimbursement information, patient records, regulatory reporting, privacy controls, provider performance, utilization, or risk-adjustment data. A technically strong candidate without healthcare context may need time to understand coding systems, clinical workflows, data ownership, and the consequences of a faulty metric.

That domain knowledge can raise the value of experience.

It also narrows the hiring pool. A worker with eight years in general retail analytics does not necessarily satisfy a requirement for eight years of related healthcare work.

Epic and internal certification requirements

Johns Hopkins Medicine describes Application Coordinator I roles as positions that participate in the development and design of assigned applications and require deep knowledge of a specific Epic module.

Epic expertise is not merely a generic software skill.

Healthcare organizations configure modules around registration, scheduling, clinical documentation, orders, billing, referrals, and other workflows. Application coordinators often work between end users, vendors, technical teams, analysts, and operational leaders.

The reviewed BI postings also require Johns Hopkins enterprise data warehouse certification within six months. The lead role adds an external or product-specific credential such as Epic, Tableau, Certified Analytics Professional, or project management certification.

This creates a mixed credential model:

  • institutional certification verifies knowledge of Hopkins systems;
  • product certification verifies platform expertise;
  • education establishes a broader analytical foundation;
  • healthcare experience provides domain context.

A degree alone does not satisfy the whole profile.

Johns Hopkins IT is broader than software support

The Johns Hopkins Medicine technology page displayed 14 IT vacancies when reviewed. Listed positions included an Epic Application Coordinator, Healthcare Systems Engineer, Product Manager, Senior Health Data Analyst, Senior Data Scientist in clinical AI, Senior ERP Business Analyst supporting Workday, Programmer Analyst in AI productivity, Systems Development Manager, and User Experience Architect.

That inventory is a snapshot.

It does not represent annual hiring, net employment growth, or the total number of technology workers across Johns Hopkins. Openings may be added, filled, canceled, or reclassified.

The mix is more informative than the count.

Healthcare IT now includes:

  • electronic health record configuration;
  • enterprise resource planning;
  • analytics and data governance;
  • cybersecurity and privacy;
  • artificial intelligence;
  • user experience;
  • systems engineering;
  • product management;
  • technical support.

A generic “Johns Hopkins IT salary” obscures those separate markets.

Cybersecurity carries a higher national median

BLS projects security-analyst employment to grow 29% from 2024 to 2034, adding 52,100 jobs and producing approximately 16,000 openings per year. Analysts may also work beyond 40 hours or remain on call for emergencies.

That market matters to Johns Hopkins because healthcare organizations hold sensitive clinical, financial, research, and workforce information.

Yet a security benchmark should not be applied to a BI analyst.

Both may work inside the same technology department, but the security analyst’s responsibilities include protecting networks, responding to attacks, testing recovery procedures, and assessing technical risk. Indeed has displayed materially different Programmer Analyst estimates for Johns Hopkins Health System.

One Maryland page showed an estimate of $93,167 a year, while another Baltimore-specific page displayed approximately $54,124, based on only three past and present job postings.

That difference is too large to treat casually.

Possible reasons include separate samples, job levels, locations, posting dates, or title definitions. Indeed estimates may also combine positions that share a title while differing in technical scope and seniority.

The official range attached to a current vacancy is stronger evidence.

Third-party figures can expose inconsistencies or suggest a rough pattern, but they should not override employer-posted compensation when the exact job is available.

Advancement from analyst to lead

The two Hopkins BI postings provide a visible career comparison.

The senior role requires four to seven years of related healthcare experience and three years of analytics. The lead role requires at least eight years of related healthcare experience and four years of analytics, while also preferring a master’s degree and requiring an additional analytics or platform credential.

The pay minimum rises from $37.70 to $41.94 an hour, an increase of $4.24. The maximum rises from $65.99 to $73.39, an increase of $7.40.

Those differences are calculations from the postings.

They do not establish the raise an existing senior analyst would receive after promotion. An employee’s current position within the old range, the new job’s responsibilities, internal equity, and compensation review would affect the actual change.

The postings show different ranges. They do not publish a promotional formula.

The outlook is strong, but annual openings mislead

BLS projects both computer systems analysts and the broader computer-occupation group to grow 9% from 2024 to 2034. Systems analysts are expected to add 45,500 jobs, reaching 566,500 positions, with approximately 34,200 openings per year.

Annual openings exceed net job creation because many arise when workers transfer occupations or leave the labor force.

The same distinction applies to cybersecurity and data science.

Data scientists are projected to grow 34%, but the 23,400 annual openings include replacements. Information security analysts are projected to grow 29%, while their 16,000 yearly openings also include worker exits and transfers.

Hiring demand is strong.

It is not unlimited, and it does not guarantee growth at Johns Hopkins in every budget year. Hospital finances, project funding, technology implementations, outsourcing decisions, and completed system conversions can alter internal staffing even while national occupational demand rises.

Hybrid work comes with operational conditions

Several Johns Hopkins technology listings describe hybrid or remote arrangements, including positions requiring periodic office attendance for go-lives, special projects, or weekend work. The technology search page showed roles with expected on-site attendance one or two days per month while requiring residence in specified nearby states or the District of Columbia.

Remote does not always mean location-independent.

Healthcare technology teams may need to support system launches, testing, incident response, training, or major workflow changes on site. A posting can be primarily remote while reserving the right to require additional attendance.

The Senior and Lead BI postings also state that the employer may modify work schedules as needed.

That language limits any assumption that a current schedule is permanently fixed.

What public data cannot establish

The reviewed sources do not reveal:
